India strongly condemned the recent vandalism of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence in Dhaka, expressing regret over the destruction of the historic site. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, called the act “regrettable,” stating, “It is disheartening that the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a symbol of Bangladesh’s struggle for freedom against occupation and oppression, was attacked on February 5, 2025.”

He further emphasized, “This residence holds significant importance for the national consciousness of Bangladesh, as it represents the freedom struggle that shaped the Bangla identity and pride. Such an act of vandalism should be unequivocally condemned.”

On Wednesday, a mob vandalized Rahman’s residence in Dhaka. According to Dhaka Tribune, video footage showed flames engulfing one of the floors of the house. The protestors, reportedly demanding a ban on the Awami League, forcibly entered the premises after breaking through the gate, causing widespread damage.

Local media outlets suggested that the unrest was linked to an online speech given by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Social media posts had previously called for a “Bulldozer Procession” towards Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence if Hasina delivered the speech.

Around 8 PM local time, a rally of protestors arrived and broke into the main gate of the house. By 10:45 PM, an excavator was brought in to demolish the property. Protestors reportedly climbed to the second floor, using hammers, crowbars, and wooden planks to destroy portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and damage other sections of the historic house.
